It comes down to how involved you want to be in the day-to-day support.

Some people prefer to stay closely involved — choosing their own team, managing the schedule, and coordinating directly. That’s what our Self Managed Membership is designed for. It recognises the effort and responsibility of Members who want to take the lead themselves.

Others prefer a more hands-off approach. With Full Service Membership, we take care of the details — learning what matters to you, matching the right people, and making sure everything runs smoothly. It’s a good option if you’re supporting someone from a distance, or if you’d rather not manage the logistics yourself.

In both options, you’re always in control. It’s just about how much support you want in the background.

Home care is available to older Australians (65 and older, or 50 or over for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people) who need extra support to continue living safely and comfortably at home. Eligibility is determined through a My Aged Care assessment, which looks at your health, mobility, and ability to manage daily tasks. This assessment will help determine your access to the new Support at Home program.

While home care services can cover a wide range of supports — such as personal care, transport, and help around the house — they don’t include everyday living costs like groceries, rent, or utility bills. Medical procedures, prescription medications, and major home renovations are also not funded under Support at Home.

Home care can be funded in two main ways: through government-subsidised Support at Home funding or as private, self-funded care. Many older Australians are required to pay an income-based contribution for the services they receive under the Independence and Everyday Living service categories, while others choose to pay privately for immediate access and more flexibility. Private home care services allow you to start support without waiting for government approval.

Yes, self-funded retirees can be assessed by My Aged Care and receive government funding for in-home aged care. Participant contributions under Support at Home are determined by Services Australia, and there is a lifetime cap of $130,000. Under Support at Home, you will only pay for the services you use, and Clinical Supports are fully funded by the government. Self-funded retirees contribute 50% for Independence services and 80% for Everyday Living services.

At Five Good Friends, our all-inclusive service prices are lower than many providers’ rates. All Five Good Friends Members, regardless of their pension status, enjoy the consistency of being matched with dedicated Helpers. Knowing who will come into your home (and when) is a real value.

Home care, also known as at-home aged care, focuses on supporting you to stay in your own home. Services can include things like cleaning, personal care, and meal preparation. The confusion often comes from the term “aged care,” which is also used for residential facilities (or aged care homes).

The new Support at Home program has replaced the Home Care Package program, creating a simpler, fairer and more flexible approach to in-home care.

That depends on your individual needs, goals, and care plan. Some people only need a few hours a week for help around the house, while others may require daily or overnight visits. Under both private and government-funded home care, you can adjust the frequency of visits as your situation changes.

Depending on your funding, you can access a wide range of services, including:

  • Daily personal care – support with bathing, grooming, eating, and maintaining independence
  • Transport – getting to appointments, work, study, or community activities
  • Household tasks – cooking, cleaning, laundry, and anything else that keeps your home functional
  • Social and community support

No, you will not be able to receive support through both programs at the same time. People who were receiving NDIS funding before turning 65 may continue to receive NDIS funding, as long as they meet the eligibility criteria. If you’re older than 65 when applying for in-home support, you need to check whether you are eligible for Support at Home funding through My Aged Care.
